What are cookies?

Cookies are files saved on your phone, tablet or computer when you visit a website.

They store information about how you use the website, such as the pages you visit.

Cookies are not viruses or computer programs. They are very small so do not take up much space.

How we use cookies

We use cookies to:

  • make our website work, for example by keeping it secure
  • remember which pop-ups you’ve seen
  • measure how you use our website, such as which links you click on (analytics cookies)

Change your cookie settings

Some cookies, like those used to measure how you use our website, are not needed for our website to work.

These cookies can help us make our website better, and you can say no to them below.

How we count visits to our website

We use WordPress.com Stats to count visits to our website. It is provided by Automattic, the company that hosts our website, and works on our behalf.

When you visit a page, it records the page, the website you came from, your type of browser and device, your browser language, your country and your IP address (the number that identifies your internet connection).

Automattic keeps your IP address for 28 days and uses this information only to produce our visitor figures. We only see totals, such as how many people visited a page. We cannot see who you are, and we do not use this information for advertising.

We do this under the UK rule that allows websites to collect statistics to improve their service, as long as you can say no. If you say no, we will stop counting your visits. Your choice is saved for a year.

If your browser sends a "do not track" or "global privacy control" signal, we treat that as a no.
